Pathway Healthcare Opens New Birmingham, AL Location at St. Vincent’s East Campus

Business Wire / Birmingham, AL (May 1, 2018) – Pathway Healthcare, a leading provider of office-based medical and behavioral treatment for drug and alcohol addiction and dependency, has opened its new flagship office in Birmingham, AL, located on the campus of one of Birmingham’s leading medical facilities, St. Vincent’s East. The new location will also serve as Pathway Healthcare’s national training facility for its doctors, nurses, counselors, and other team members.

Pathway Healthcare specializes in treating opioid use disorder, alcohol dependency, and other drug use disorders through a proprietary care model, known as MAT Plus®, that combines medication-assisted treatment with behavioral counseling.

Dr. Karen Avery is the Medical Director for the Birmingham office. She has been treating addiction and substance use disorders in the Birmingham community for the past five years and recently completed her board certification exam for Addiction Medicine.

“I’ve seen the tragic results of alcohol and substance use disorders in Birmingham, but I have also seen people turn their lives around with the right care,” said Dr. Avery. “Pathway Healthcare brings world-class care to the community with a combination of medication therapy and behavioral counseling that gives patients the best chance of recovery.”

Pathway Healthcare’s Chief Medical Officers, Dr. Brent Boyett and Dr. Stephen Taylor, will also be based within this Birmingham location.

Twenty-one million Americans suffer from some form of alcohol or substance use disorder. In 2016, 42,200 Americans died from opioid-related drug overdoses. Alabama had 736 reported drug overdose deaths in 2015 and in 2015 had the highest number of opioid pain reliever prescriptions per person in the nation.

“Breaking down the stigma associated with substance use disorders is critical to getting people the treatment they need,” said Scott Olson, CEO of Pathway Healthcare. “By operating out of a location within St. Vincent’s, we are bringing addiction medicine into Birmingham’s mainstream healthcare system.”

With Alabama locations in Birmingham, Madison, Hamilton, and Mobile, as well as across multiple other states, Pathway Healthcare is aggressively working to increase access to care in Alabama and throughout the country.
